DML SPEAKER

A distributed mode loudspeaker, or DML, is superior in several ways to a conical speaker design. It has a more uniform output band and a near omni-directional angle of output. This allows the speaker to emit sound all throughout a space, effectively filling it without the tendency to favour certain directions. The speaker design itself has a thin profile, due to the compact nature of the hardware. The soundboard is a luthier-quality piece of Sitka Spruce varnished with tung oil. The frame is made of steel rod and welded together with washers to support the soundboard by a woven pattern. This pattern is both neat and a means of suspending the board without incurring severe losses to the audio output. When placed on its back, the soundboard becomes a surface to explore the vibrations of sound.

CERAMIC STUDIES

These projects were undertaken in an effort to better understand the production of ceramics. By learning about the process of making ceramics, more possibilities about their applications in design were inferred. The art of ceramics is very sculptural in nature, allowing the maker to imbue human characteristics into the forms as well as generate forms with extreme detail and precision. The application of glazes provides a near endless range of finishes which are explored in the context of lighting.

FURNITURE

These are several examples where fabrication skills were employed to produce furniture and furniture prototypes. Though some are much more traditional, others attempt more radical forms of typical furnishings. The collection includes examples of reinvisioning material that would otherwise have been considered waste. These materials vary from corrugated steels to old timber from shipping crates.
